Our Young Artists’ Competition once again proved to be a success and at the Prize Giving reception held on Friday 28th April three talented students were picked as winners.

The judging panel consisted of artist Francisco Merello, representatives from the Sovereign Group Phoebe Kelly and Eleanor Turpin (who is also Programme Secretary for Gibraltar DFAS) and DFAS de la Frontera Chairman Jo Ward.

The Members’ Prize of €150, sponsored by the Sovereign Group, was won by 14 year old Loreto Villegas Maestro from Sotogrande International School for her lino print entitled Long Walk Home. This artwork was also picked by the judges as the winner of the €200 prize in the 14 and under age group for its emotive subject matter captured by Loreto in a difficult medium.

Talented Miguel Ángel Santos Molina, aged 15, from San Roque school IES José Cadalso won €300 in the 15 and over category with his detailed and beautiful pencil drawing on paper entitled Mariposas.

The judges decided to award a special prize of €50, jointly sponsored by Gibraltar DFAS and DFAS de la Frontera, to thirteen years old Ismael López Hlioua for Alucinación (acrylic on card) for its use of colour, subject matter and humour.

Huge thanks go to Mariloly Cabedo and everybody else who helped to in the organisation of this annual exhibition and competition which brings an awareness of the benefits of art to young people.
